When Aliy pulled into Nulato, she was 3 hours behind the 4 time Iditarod Champ Martin Buser. When Buser left Nulato, Aliy cut his lead by 1 hour, leaving to the chase only 2 hours from his departure.
And this is how you "reel in" a front runner.
I'm not sure if the rest in Nulato was a planned stop.....her dogs were doing great speed wise, and reported to be animated and banging to leave....but she dropped 2 dogs and rested 3 hours before going after Buser. I am beginning to think she meant to do that.....not drop dogs of course but rest. Her 2012 run had a problem in this section of trail. The long run from Kaltag to Unalakleet was difficult mentally, so last year taking the southern route she also approached Kaltag differently by resting on the Yukon then blowing through. This year perhaps with that rest in Nulato she can again will blow through Kaltag, where Buser appears to be stopped right now. We will know shortly!
I have no idea if my sponsor dog Chemo is still on the team or one she had dropped. As soon as I know I'll make a post.
I need to do some research on the rest of the pack....I know Dallas and Burmiester are right behind Aliy but they will be required to rest for 8 hours in Kaltag. Right now, out of the lead pack who have left Nulato, only Aliy, Buser and Petit will be free to move out of Kaltag.
Time for some coffee!!
