Zirkle Blows Through Nulato on her way to Kaltag
As expected, Aily only spent a few moments in Nulato, and then her and her Team of 14 dogs continued out of Nulato towards Kaltag, 35 miles away. It should take her between about 5 hours to cover that distance, maybe longer if she stops to snack her dogs. Dallas is set to arrive in Nulato in about an hour given his present speed. He too, would quite likely blow right through since he rested some back in Galena. He is about 11 miles back from Zirkle right now. King is back behind Dallas, followed closely now by Mitch Seaveys Team, then Baker and Burmiester rounding out the chase pack. A good question is whats going to happen once in Kaltag? Most mushers will stop here for a rest after covering the 135 miles from their last real rest in Galena. But Mitch may make a move out of Kaltag early since he is the only musher who rested on the way. It will be interesting to hear how his team is looking as he goes through Nulato. Some Iditarods have been won or lost as to when to cut rest in Kaltag, and head to Unlakleet 90 miles away on the coast of the Bering Sea. A prize of $ 2,500 in Gold awaits the first musher to the Coast! There are 2 BLM Cabins on route to Unalakleet to also rest your Team comfortably.
