Both Seaveys in Ruby!

As anticipated, Mitch Seavey makes it into Ruby first...its 25 BELOW zero, and he looked pretty cold and tired. His Team looked a bit worse for the wear as well. Mitch was followed in by his son Dallas just over an hour later. Dallas looked cold, but his dogs looked perky and fit. According to Bruce Lee, Iditarod commentator, this is perfect weather conditions for a sled dog race...for the dogs that is. They like it this cold as long as there is not a lot of wind. The musher however is a human...they are NOT comfortable in this kind of weather, definitely a weak link. So far, its just the Seaveys now in Ruby....but coming down the trail only 3 miles out is John Baker....then it looks as though Ailey is coming off her trail rest at 7.5 mph, passing Burmiester and is now only 7 miles outside of Ruby. It will be interesting to see if she stops at Ruby, or continues on down the Yukon before taking her next break...and thus taking the lead in this race on the Yukon River. The trail along the Yukon is a literal snow machine highway between river villages, thus connecting the villages along the way. So unlike the interior trail from McGrath to Ruby, all Teams will have a pretty good trail to move along on no matter where they are in the pack.
