Mackey Has Solid 3 Hour Lead
When Mackey blew through the Kaltag checkpoint yesterday he basically went "all in" on this race....and it paid off! Not only did he reach the Bering Seas Coast first, winning $2,500 in gold nuggets, but he also put 3 hours of time between his Team and Kings Team, who just now pulled into Unalakleet. Hugn Neff will be pulling in any time now too, followed by Hans Gatt, Mitch Seavey and John Baker. When will Lance pull his snow hook and continue on to Shatoolik...45 miles up the coast? I will be watching closely for him to do so...and with how many dogs? He came into Unalakleet with 12 strong dogs...barring any injuries I'm betting he will stick with this dynamic dozen. King has 13 dogs, but his times and speed from Kaltag were nearly identical to Mackeys...and his dogs had more rest in Kaltag. No doubt about it...Mackeys Team is peaking...with the coast ahead of them. Last I looked, the weather from Unalakaleet to Nome is good through Tuesday, no storms or big winds to deal with. So weather this year will not be a factor. Look for Mackey to pull out of Unalakleet soon to play the role of the rabbit...will anyone bolt out and chase him?
