Mitch Seavey will be the first into Unalakleet!
Mitch Seavey is just one mile out from Unalakleet and will claim the Gold Coast award in the Idiarod! Burmeister is just a few miles back at mile marker 697....then a string of Mushers beginning with Berkowitz, then King, Aliy and Ulsom will be funneling into Unalakleet BUT this second round of Teams will quite likely blow through The checkpoint since they did stop and rest along the way. Both Mitch and Burmeister just stopped briefly to snack as it appeared on the GPS tracker. I'm not sure if the so called "heat of the day" worries exist on the coast since it is quite windy even though the temps might be above 20. It will be interesting to see who goes through at Unalakleet for sure! It's really any bodies race right now. Interesting that the 3 big prizes along the trail, Mackey at the halfway point, Buser first to the Yukon, and now Mitch the first to the Bering Sea, have all been won by 3 different Teams. But who will win the race??? I don't know if Berkowitz has really unleashed his Teams power quite yet....and then there is King with his string of big male power houses. Aliy's team is said to look good too and they ran after Hugh Neff for a good portion of the Yukon Quest and ended up winning that race in the end. We have roughly 300 miles to go....with no real clear winner in the picture.
