Mitch and Burmeister are Tired!
The first 2 Teams are into Unk, and they both are tired. Burmeister caught up with Aliy 18 miles outside of Laktag where she was camped, then had to break trail until 18 miles outside of Unk when Mitch took the lead and broke it the rest of the way to the coast. People are saying they quite likely will have to stay for a longer rest....like 6 hours rest instead of the typical 4 hours at this stage in the game. Breaking trail was hard, and it appears to have taken its toll. Next in we have Berkowitz just 9 miles outside of Unk, then King one mile behind him, Aliy one mile behind Jeff, Redington just 2 miles behind Aliy, and Ulsom one mile behind Redington. It really does not matter what order these Teams ride into Unk.....what will matter is what order they will leave in! The next chase pack is back at mile marker 576 presently led by Dee Dee.....Buser, Dallas, Gebhardt and Baker are all within a mile or so from eachother. The Pundants in Unk say the winner of the race may be in this more conservative group....saving their Teams power for when they really need it. As one of them recently said, "Im not racing to a checkpoint, Im racing to Nome". With trail conditions not being the greatest, perhaps a conservative race will be the strategy that wins!
