Mackey Poised to Win Halfway Gold at Iditarod Checkpoint!
In about an hour, Lance Mackey will roll into Iditarod and claim the Dorthy Page halfway award at the Iditarod checkpoint. He is followed closely by Sonny Lindner, a veteran musher who often times was in the top ten back in the 80s and last year finished in 14th place. King is about 20 miles back behind these two. These lead 3 have not taken their 24 hour rest yet...Buser, who presently is resting quietly in Ophir will be hot on their heels very soon. When you do the math, Buser should be at least 3 hours ahead of the lead pack once the 24 hour rests have all been taken.....that is if he gets back out on the trail soon.....because around 4 am our time, the hounds will be released from their 24 mandatory rest in Takotna with sights on the rabbit Buser on down the trail. Then, around 6 am our time, the group of hounds in Ophir will be released as well. Commentators in Tacotna said Busers Team didn't wolf down their snacks....could it be they were distracted by the crowd, or perhaps the long runs are taking a toll? The next 180 miles through the interior will tell the story. Look to Anvik on the Yukon to see this race really shaping up. Just in time for the wind and the rainy run up the Mighty Yukon River.
