Descriptions of the Trail
From Rohn on into Nikolia, the trail was rough to say the least. Dee Dee Jonrowe has a great story regarding her ride....at times being jostled so much her knee swelled up across a snowless Farewell Burn (80 miles long), to running on top of water over ice to cross the Post River...simply terrified she was being swept down stream...in a panic she "balled up her 16 dogs" and lead them to safety on the bank...then spent some time untangling them. Once she got off the snow less Farewell Burn she was happy to be in the lakes....ice covered of course, but to her surprise completely under water...her dogs had to claw their way through the water covered glare ice for the next 30 miles. This is her 31st Iditarod, and she say despite the horrible conditions (they are the worse she has seen) her Team is traveling at a good clip! Oh, and Buffalo where all over the famed "Buffalo Chutes" down off of the Alaskan Range....the dogs smelled them everywhere and ran fast as she held tight for a bumpy, rocky dirt ride. Simply incredible. I cant imagine!!!
