Brent made it into Unalakleet about 45 minutes ahead of Dallas....and then Aliy came in about an hour after Dallas. Both Aliy and Brent are running a bit slower than Dallas, who is running very efficiently with 10 dogs to their 14 dogs. Dallas is known for running fast yet small dog teams and he appears to be doing that again this year. Wade Marrs is almost to Unalakleet, and runs a totally different schedule of short fast runs.....same with Mitch who presently is camped out at Old Woman Cabin. So as Brent, Dallas and Aliy rest at Unalakleet, the rest of the Portage Trail Parade shakes out like this:
Marrs at mile 711
Mitch at mile 696 and resting
Kaiser at mile 690
Burmiester at mile 685
Baker at mile 681
Petit at mile 679
Ulsom also at mile 679
That rounds out the top 10.....but I got to add Jeff King at mile 676 and resting. He, like Aliy, have put the incident behind them now and for the sake of theie Team are keeping up beat and moving down the trail! When Jeff arrives in Unalakleet he will be greated with signs made in honor of his fallen Team mate Nash.
Will Brent play the rabbit and jump on out on the trail ahead of the chase pack? Or will someone like Mitch presently resting blow through Unalakleet to grab the reins in front? Time will tell.....300 miles to go...including the infamous Norton Sound sea ice crossing and then the wicked winds from the North as the Teams travel west to Nome.
