We all know Mitch's #1 Leader Tanner was retired...and then his #1 replacement for Tanner had a sore toe the day of the Restart.....so he didnt even get harnessed. 300 miles into the race he had to drop another young leader....that really was bad for Mitch. But he has perservered....his run times have been awesome....in fact the commentators on Iditarod.com has said Mitch's Team is the Team to beat.
Enter the Bering Sea Coast. The trail from Unalakleet to Shaktoolik is through a frozen swamp.....what a Musher needs now is a great lead dog. Aliy has such a dog...his name is Scout. Scout led Aliys Team out of Unalakleet and she blew through the next check point of Shaktoolik where Mitch was resting. And what did Mitch do? Harnessed up his Team and followed Aliy and the Team lead by Scout through the frozen tundra to Shaktoolik! Hitch Hiker Mitch! When Aliy and Mitch found Dallas camped by the shores of Norton Sound it looks like Aliy said "ok...now your turn"!
So as it is right now at 8:30 EST....Brent is in the lead out on the ice (WITHOUT taking a break) at mile 786....Mitch and Dallas are at mile 778...remember, Mitch rested in Shaktoolik until Aliy came along to lead him throught the swamps...and Dallas (with is small team of 9) must have been playing it conservative....allowing these two to catch up with him to help HIM across the ice....and Aliy, Aliy smartly pulled over and is NOT leading the 2 Seaveys across the ice...she is presently following them at mile 776.
There you go Seavey Boys....you lead the chase pack for awhile! Way to go Aliy.....way to go!!
