The Inspirational Cindy Abbott - Bead on Nome and the Red Lantern!

Cindy Abbotts story is one of those inspirational Iditarod stories from the "back of the pack".  This woman has summited Everest.....and in her 3rd attempt to run the Iditarod it appears 3 is a charm....she will be in Nome soon, and will claim the Red Lantern award for the Last Musher Off the Iditarod Trail.

But if I were to guess, Cindy will be more jazzed about capturing a picture of her under the Burled Arch with her NORD banner much more than any award....NORD...the National Organization of Rare Diseases.  You see, Cindy has Wegner's Granulomatosis...a disease that restricts blood flow to various organs...and at 40 below....Cindy, like Lance, dug deep...and got through.  Of course Cindy didn't have a Brother to help her....she had herself and quite likely other mushers cheering her on....because that is what they do...and of course knowing fans/family and friends were thinking about her and her quest was probably more than enough to stay focused and on the trail to Nome!  Well done Cindy!!

Presently she is not quite to the Safety Checkpoint....but she ain't stopping now!

Here are a few pictures we captured of Cindy on our travels:

We stopped for gas after seeing a MOOSE and Denali on the Parks Highway.  Cindy was at the store too!

Cindy on her way to Nome  - Fairbanks Restart - Notice the "traditional" style sled...no trailers here!

Cindy will be awarded the Red Lantern Award upon her arrival in Nome!
